Following last year's disappointment in the cancellation of the fixture due to poor weather, all involved were lucky enough to get a "weather" break on Thursday 10th July. The dreadful summer of 2008 relented and the game took place at Lichfield Cricket Club at 11am.

A late team change was needed as Scott Elstone, the Friary captain was called up to play for Nottinghamshire Second XI at Trent Bridge. James Liddiard took over the role as captain.

As is "usual" the MCC won the toss and chose to bat. Just about all the MCC team were Midland and Birmingham league players and were captained by Richard Bostock, husband of Friary teacher Mrs L. Bostock, who assisted in the initial contact to help secure the fixture.

A maiden first over by Liddiard led to the introduction of Jono Allcock. Success followed the third ball with Owen caught well by Adam Matthews.

A partnership of 109 then followed between J.J. Porter (who was dropped at 24 and went on to score 101) and J. H. Burnett. The spin of Andy Malkin caused all the MCC batsman some trouble and he ended up with figures of 11-1-31-3; fantastic figures against such good players. P.M. Crawley, brother of England player John, looked in good shape, but a good stumping by Richard Burton got him out.

An excellent hot lunch was provided and the MCC continued to bat until they reach 210 for 7 in 43 overs.

The first four Friary batsman all got starts including our great player Jake Van Galen from Australia. Stuart Fielding batted very well for his 28 runs as the Friary batsman stepped up the pace to gain victory. A couple took risks and lost their wickets which was unfortunate but necessary due to two enforced rain breaks. Friary ended up with 167 for 8 off only 36 overs and so the match was drawn.

Both sides thoroughly enjoyed the day long match. The school would like to thank Lichfield Cricket Club and in particular Graham Liddiard who worked hard to ensure the day went so well.

We eagerly await the date of next years' match.

The Friary is one of only two Sports Colleges in the country to host an MCC match, and to draw with such a strong team was a major achievement, which reflects the strength of cricket at the Friary.
