Ben Wilkinson in Y9 is now a member of the Derby County Junior Academy.
In Rugby, it has been Staffordshire School of Rugby trial time. Jack Bayliss, Michael Butler, Rory Davis and Harry Marshall attended the trial and Michael, Rory and Harry were successful. They now become a member of the Staffordshire School of Rugby which is attached to Leicester Tigers Rugby Club and receive specialist coaching and development.
U14 trials were postponed due to waterlogged pitches!!! Selected for the trial were Jack Fielding, Robbie Gleeson, Matt Haywood, Ed Lambert and Jerome Sey. In rearranged trials Matt Haywood was successful.
In the U15 age group Adam Butler got through initial trials and was invited to a final trial. Despite performing well he was not successful, but continues to be the outstanding player in his school team. Hopefully, he will have another chance to impress. Other pupils sent for trials were Sam Craddock, Sam Power, Joe Meehan and Ben Robinson.
In the U16 trials Harry O’Connor and Jamie O’Sullivan have been selected for the County Schools Squad.
Daily Mail matches have begun and after disposing of John Taylor High School the 1st XV play at Abbotsholme in the second round.
At U15 level, Friary beat Weston Road in the first round and lost 14-13 to King Edwards Lichfield in the second round. We now play in the Daily Mail Vase Competition, visiting Lawrence Sheriff School, Rugby.
We now run boys football teams in all years and Y7, Y8 & Y9 play in the Cannock & District leagues with mixed results so far. We also enter County Cups and English Schools Cup. Y10 have got through a couple of rounds but the 1st XI lost in the third round to Thomas Alleynes, Uttoxeter.
We now also run two girls teams at U13 & U15 level. Both are entered in the Minute Maid Cup and both are safely through to the third round winning their matches with high scores. We are the 2007/08 U13 Girls’ National Champions.
Netball and Hockey matches have begun with success so far. Laura Eggington in Y9 has been selected for the County U14 Netball Squad. Beth Merrick has been selected for Staffordshire U13 Hockey team.
For the more artistic we run gymnastics and trampolining clubs, with competitions later in the year. County Cross Country has started very well too.
In the first Cannock & District event, Friary won the Y7 girls and boys race thanks to Alice Cattell and Louis Dawson. The Y7 girls’ team were the winning team with the boys’ team runners up.The Y10/11 girls’ team also won their competition with Lily Sutton winning the individual race with ease.
The department welcomed Miss Louise Brown to the department on a Monday morning. An ex pupil, Lloyd Dune't, is a year long, one day a week, week experience.
6th form students are helping with some extra curricular activities whilst the Y10 & Y 11 BTEC group are helping to run/organise/officiate the Inter Form programme.
Two Friary 6th form students, Laura Gibbins (right) & Jayde Fleming-Smith (left) have been selected as the two Sports Young Ambassadors for the Burntwood and Lichfield Sports Partnerships.
