He has been doing a good job for school too…..our Ist XI have reached the final of the Staffordshire Schools Cup by beating Leek High School on penalties after the score was 2-2 after normal time. Callum saved two penalties to help us go through – we await the opposition and venue for the Final. Meanwhile Katie Wilkinson is representing England Under 17 Girls in the European Championships and also played in the victory over Finland during a training week over half term in February. She has been selected for the European Championships 2nd group stage which takes place in Italy over the Easter Holidays. Cannock and District Schools Trampolining

Friary entered teams in to the Cannock and District Schools Trampolining competition held at Hagley Park Sports College in January.

Hetty Hyde Durrant won the Senior Advanced Competition with a very skilful routine. The Junior and Intermediate teams both came third in their competitions out of seven schools so performed very creditably.

Three of the schools’ Rugby teams reached the Staffordshire Cup at the semi final stages. These are the 1st XV [after Easter] the Under 16’s [Newcastle H lost 22-12] and the Under15’s [St Josephs College H Won 17-15] – the final will be after Easter. Cross Country

Friary hosted the final Cannock and District Cross Country League meeting on March 1st and would like to thank Mr Smith, one of our Parents, for sorting the courses out on our field and to Mr Van Block and Ms Haywood for their help with the event and out teams. Morgan Harlow came second in the Y7 girls race, Alice Cattell [County Champion] and Becky Wright[Y8] finished in the top ten in the Y9 race and Lily Sutton won the Y11 girls race. Jake Nicholson Y9 achieved a personal best by finishing 6th in his race. Morgan, Alice, Jake and Daisy Riley, Hannah Gladwin, Jake Porter, Dominic Burden and Rob Miles all ran for the District in the County Championships.

The Friary Astro project began in January and managed to progress despite the poor weather with frequent snow and heavy rain. A rough completion date was mid April.    But unfortunately due to the rain and saturated ground conditions the project has been slightly delayed and may cost more money than initially budgeted for – funding sources are being looked at so a quick solution can hopefully be found. Great news – construction has recommenced on March 9th with a hopeful completion date of early May.

Sport Relief

Pupils entered into the spirit of the day : all pupils having PE lesson that day will either run one mile or contribute to a one mile swim. Pupils can paid to watch a staff Netball match at lunchtime in the Sportshall – male v female – which the women won 4-2. Sport Relief socks were sold by the Sports Council and other bits of money were raised through various other ideas like the ‘Shirt of Hurt’ Some staff who avidly support local football teams swapped shirts for cash. Mr Martin wore a Villa shirt, Mrs Blatherwick a Birmingham City shirt and Mr Mansell a West Brom shirt. Hopefully £250 plus has been raised for the Sport Relief cause.

School Sports Council

Mrs Callaway oversees the School Sports Council to canvas opinion about sport at The Friary. Billy Maritza and Helen Martin have attended a Top Link Conference, both have run a Sports Poster competition and will be involved in the organisation of a Sports Award event in the Summer Term held at the Friary to highlight the success of our pupils. Representatives from all years attend the meetings.

Mrs Callaway our School Sport Co ordinator is regularly involved in the development and provision of Sport in our local Primary Schools.

Art for Sport

The Friary hosted a Youth Sports Trust Day for Art and Sport – they hosted staff and pupils from a dozen schools from around the Midlands to work with an Olympic Artist – Roald Bradstock – a British Olympic Javelin thrower. Some excellent work was achieved and the art Department produced a CD on the day and this was shown at a workshop event at the Sports College Conference at the Telford International Centre in February. We have now been asked to be involved in some International developments……watch this space !!

Friary led 2-1 at half time with goals by Ed Lambert, NULS equalised before Lambert put the Friary in front again. With Friary looking likely to hold on for the win it wasn’t to be and NULS scored in the last minute to take the game to penalty flicks – Friary lost 4-2.

As runners up Friary played in the Midland Zonal matches and played 3 Private Schools and performed really well against them – the scores not reflecting the closeness in the matches. Friary lost 8-2 against Trent College [ National Champions at Under 14 age group] with Robbie Gleeson scoring both goals. Lost 5-0 against Oakham School and then drew 2-2 with Nunnery Wood from Worcestershire with goals by Phil Round and E Lambert. Friary ended up in third place..

Sports Relief

The main event was a staff Netball match – men versus women – played in front of a large crowd. The enthusiasm outshone the quality of Netball but a bit of fun for the pupils to watch…Sports Relief socks have also been sold over the last couple of weeks and some pupils have done a sponsored swim……..pupils timetabled for Physical Education lessons ran a mile to enter into the idea of ‘going the extra mile’. The amount raised was £250+

The department wish Mrs Bennett’ all the best’ as she left on Maternity Leave in March but welcomed back Mrs Clague who we all hope is now 100% fit.

Mr B J Broad

Director of Sport @ The Friary School – an Arts and Sports College.
